Tips & Tricks.....

Known by many different names, a ‘Fascinator’ is a hair accessory, often on a comb or head band, that is most commonly adorned with plumes of feathers. They often also incorporate straw, sinamay, beads and crystals and can be made as small and delicate or as large and over the top as you like!

The only limitation is your imagination!

Fansia Tickle Mini-Hats are most often designed to be positioned to one side of the head, usually to the right, and tilted forward at a jaunty angle. They are really fun little hats and they bridge the gap between Hat and Fascinator most successfully.

Most Fansia Tickle Mini-Hats and Fascinator Bases are either made from straw or from a product called ‘sinamay’. Sinamay is woven chiefly from abacá which is a species of banana plant native to the Philippines.

Positioning & Fixing a Comb Fascinator

• Step 1

Decide where you want to place the Fascinator Base. You can place it wherever you want, however, it will look best placed to one side of the head (preferably on the right side but see exceptions below) and towards the front, near to the temple. If you put the fascinator right on top of your head, you may look like feathers or flowers have sprouted from the crown of your scalp (this is fine if this is the look you want to create).

• Step 2

The base will either have a comb or hair elastic. Working with a comb fascinator base... Backcomb the part of the hair where the fascinator will go. For fascinators with hair elastic see the guide for positioning and fixing mini hats.

• Step 3

Spray a little hairspray onto the backcombed hair. You want it to be tacky but not drenched in spray; it's only to allow the comb something to grip to for added security!

Slide the comb into the backcombed hair and finalise the position of the fascinator.

Positioning & Fixing a Mini Hat

Most Fansia Tickle Mini Hats will have hair elastic and a comb. This is to give you the flexibility to position it pretty much anywhere you like, and it holds more securely in place.

• Step 1

Before putting the Mini Hat on your head, spray the comb lightly with a bit of hair spray. You want it to be slightly tacky but not drenched. Be careful not to get too much spray on the actual mini hat. Then place the hat on your head and pull the hair elastic around the back of your head and under your hair.

• Step 2

Find the perfect position for the hat on your head. As mentioned above, most Fansia Tickle Mini Hats and Fascinators are designed to sit on the right side of the head and tilted towards the front, but there are always exceptions so go with what you feel most comfortable with. Experiment with a few different positions.

• Step 3

Place the hat slightly to the side of the correct position then move it so that the comb grabs the hair in the correct position.

• Step 4

Pull your hair free from the hair elastic using a comb. The trick here is to use the edge of the comb to create a line next to the elastic, as if creating a parting down each side of your head. The hair elastic will sit in this parting allowing you to style your hair whilst hiding the hair elastic.

There's always an exception to the rule!

As mentioned above, fascinators and mini-hats are generally made to sit slightly to the right side of the head and close to the front, however, this doesn't always look good if you have a left parting. Try positioning the fascinator or mini-hat on the hair parting. Experiment with different positions. Also, some clips look much better at the back near to a bun or twist.

The golden rule though is to try the fascinator or mini-hat in different places on your head to see which suits you best and most of all where you feel it is most comfortable!

A few other hints, tips & tricks...

Use four hair grips in a criss-cross gate shape to slide the comb behind.

Use a couple of hair grips at the end of the hair elastic nearest the mini hat or fascinator for an extra firm hold.

If using hair grips, choose a colour closest to your shade of hair colouring.
